The First Workshop – Origami

On my first day, my supervisor mentioned that it would be fine to dedicate this week to various preparations. However, eager to get acquainted with the children, I decided to host an origami workshop using the origami paper I brought from Japan. In a workshop that lasted about 30 minutes, we crafted stars together.

Surprisingly, origami requires a considerable vocabulary. Terms like ‘star,’ ‘fold,’ ‘carefully,’ ‘corner,’ and ‘crease with your fingernail’… each needed to be explained meticulously. Through this origami session, not only did we create beautiful stars, but it also served as a wonderful opportunity for the children to get to know me as a Japanese art teacher.

It was a heartwarming experience to introduce a piece of my culture, and at the same time, it became a unique way for us to bridge our languages and cultures. I look forward to more of these enriching sessions where art becomes our universal language.

We made a big star!

About Me

Hello! I’m Kayo. Originally a primary school teacher in Japan, I was moved by the need for a more inclusive educational system for foreign students, which led me to pursue further studies in Germany. Here, I focused on art education for refugees and immigrants, culminating in a thesis and the attainment of my degree. Currently, I work as an art teacher at a refugee shelter in Germany, where I strive to make a difference through creativity and language learning.

In my personal life, I am a mother to a lively two-year-old and a wife to a dedicated stay-at-home husband. Through this blog, I aim to share updates about my professional journey in English, while also keeping a personal diary in Japanese about our family life. Join me as I navigate the challenges and joys of teaching, motherhood, and cultural exchange.
